What Makes Japanese Cuisine Special?

What Makes Japanese Cuisine Special? Japanese cuisine is one of the most recognized and appreciated food cultures in the world. From sushi and ramen to traditional home-cooked meals, Japanese food is known for its balance, freshness, and presentation. This survey aims to compare how Japanese students and international students perceive Japanese cuisine and identify the characteristics that make it unique compared to other cuisines around the world. Why Is Japanese Cuisine Different? Unlike many cuisines that focus heavily on spices or rich sauces, Japanese cuisine often emphasizes natural flavors, seasonal ingredients, and visual presentation. Meals are commonly designed to provide a balance of nutrition, taste, and appearance. Many people associate Japanese food with healthy eating habits, fresh seafood, rice-based dishes, and cultural traditions that have been preserved for g...

A Reflection on Education

(Inter)cultural Communication & Nonverbal Communication This week’s class helped me better understand the importance of intercultural and nonverbal communication. Intercultural communication refers to how people from different cultural backgrounds interact and understand each other. Nonverbal communication includes body language, facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, and personal space. As a Costa Rican living in Japan, I have noticed both similarities and differences in communication styles. In Costa Rica, people are generally very expressive. We often use hand gestures, maintain direct eye contact, and show emotions openly during conversations. Physical contact, such as handshakes or friendly hugs, is also common among friends and family. In contrast, Japanese communication tends to be more indirect and subtle. Nonverbal cues are very important in Japan, an...

Cultural "Other" Awareness

Sometimes the topic CULTURAL "OTHER" AWARENESS can confuse you a little but the way that i saw it to undertanded in a better way is how the people treat to each other in different countries, knowing this is much easier and the important part will be who is this person, a stranger, your friend, your family etc... In this class i noticed that is really similar bewteen countries, i meet people from Malaysia, China, Japan and more and everywhere was almost the same, they are respecful and don't talk to strangers if they don't need to but sometimes they don't mind to talk, most of the times will be just a little greating maybe because they hold the elevator for you or something like that but is not bad to talk, of course having in mind wich topic are you gonna talk about, there's lots of topic to talk about but you cannot talk any of them with a stranger, you will always will try to talk about neutral or not to personal topics like the weather or something you saw...

Sleep and Rest in Japan and the World

In this class we talk about sleep and rest and what is the difference between Japan and the rest of the world wen it comes to this topic. Really interesting because is totally different in Japan is normal to see people falling a sleep everywhere dosen't matter the place or the time you can see people sleeping in the train, bus, parks or even at work, this is becuase in Japan is really common for people sleep a really little amount of hours and staying awake for work or studies, that's why in japanese culture when they see someone sleeping in public they don't relate it to laziness but to hardworking and that something i will say really japanese, i never heard something like that, on the other hand i also learn a little bit about the rest of the world, this part was more similar to my own country except for the part of taking naps because thats not that usual in my country. Everything that we talk about in this class was super interensting and important to, be well rested i...
